Fire Cooking Workshop + Epic feast
Our team will be sharing and demonstrating this unique cooking style and techniques in a hands-on workshop around an open fire.
Located in Vermont, Shepherd's Hearth provides a quintessential Green Mountain experience throughout New England.
This workshop is community centered and for cooks of all levels who love food and are curious about the primal, ancestral knowledge surrounding the open fire.
Open-fire cooking is a craft! During our workshop you'll learn the fundamental building blocks of this craft: fire management, wood selection, cooking with the seasons and surroundings, preparing and breaking down ingredients and mastering open fire cooking techniques such as ember-roasting, grilling, working the flat-top, Brazilian style sword cooking, hanging meats, and trussing whole animals.
At the end of the workshop, we will all sit down and share the abundant fruits of our labor in a farm to table dinner. There will be plenty of fire snacks throughout the day, then a meal shared as a communal feast. Attendees will go home with a once in a lifetime experience, and the tools to put into practice this rustic tradition at their own gatherings with friends and family.

Please reach out if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We will arrive and start a fire! We will begin with the step by step process of an open fire cook. Then the distinct facets of open fire cooking will be touched on. As the fire reaches maturity, we will get to cooking! Everyone will get a chance to participate and we will go over the unique cooking method for each item from meats, to vegetables, to fruits. After the food is ready, we will process, prepare and plate each item and will learn some techniques for plating and beautifying the space. Then we will share a delightful Communal feast!
The workshop is an all day experience that starts at 9AM. We will serve dinner at 6PM and likely wrap things up by 8PM.
We can do a workshop in your back yard, on a farm, or in a field: basically anywhere we can access with a vehicle and can legally have an open fire.
Please contact our team with your vision and we will do our best to help make it a reality!
We often times include an early morning animal slaughter and butchery component to our workshops. We teach how to do on farm kill, skinning, evisceration, and butchering. This is a beautiful process that really adds respect and value to the craft. Please let us know if you'd be interested in something like this on your farm or property!
Fire-cooked snacks will be provided throughout the day. We will have water available on site. This is an alcohol free event, but please feel free to bring your own refreshments.
We love dogs, but unfortunately we do not allow pets due to health and safety concerns.
Yes! Children are welcome, as long as they do not interfere with the workshop. It is the parents responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of their children throughout the day.
We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and electronic payments like Venmo.
The workshop base price is $150 per participant for Workshops in Vermont. Travel costs will be evaluated for all other states.
This includes an all day, in-depth workshop, a farm-to-table feast and a workshop booklet that will contain the information shared in the workshop as well as a list of international fire cooking inspirations and local farms that we would recommend.
Absolutely! The Shepherd's Hearth goes where the Spirit takes us. Please reach out and we will discuss how to create something unique together.
The Shepherd's Hearth
It was a cool October day, we woke early to slaughter the goat for the feast, make the fire and begin the slow and ancient process of fire cooking a whole goat. To share this knowledge with those eager to learn is a great gift. Jesse and Lucia had the vision for this beautiful event and together we made it happen.
